Gretchen loses wig on stage at Rock The Mountain festival

Brazilian singer Gretchen lost her wig on stage during a concert at the Rock The Mountain festival before addressing the audience about her alopecia.

The 67-year-old performer revealed on Monday that the accessory falling off was already expected, though the mishap took place earlier in the concert than anticipated.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon as she danced to Chorando Se Foi with a backing dancer. Mid-choreography, the hairpiece slipped from her head, sparking widespread reaction across social media. Rather than halting the performance, Gretchen paused the show to speak openly with the crowd about her ongoing experience with alopecia, a condition that causes significant hair loss.

On Monday morning, just hours after the event, the singer posted an explanation video to her Instagram followers. She shared that she had already anticipated that the accessory could come loose during the concert because medical guidance required her to wear the lace hairpiece somewhat loose rather than tightly fitted against her scalp.

She explained that she had even arranged a plan with her makeup artist in advance. During the routine for the song Believe, which features vigorous head movements, she knew the hairpiece would almost certainly come off, so she had instructed her makeup artist to stay close to the stage to assist when she took the hair off. However, the lace slipped free several songs earlier than scheduled.

Empowerment Message to Fans

Despite the unexpected timing, Gretchen chose to halt the musical number and talk directly to the audience about living with alopecia. In her video update the following day, she reinforced the message of solidarity she had delivered from the stage, emphasizing that she takes pride in serving as an inspiration to her followers.

The singer declared that a person can have short hair, no hair at all, or be completely bald because true beauty is internal. She told her audience that power does not reside in hair and that physical appearance does not define self-worth.

During the pause in her performance, Gretchen also reflected on a simple everyday experience that she came to value deeply following treatment. She shared how meaningful it was to take a shower and feel the water falling directly onto her bare scalp.

Complications From Scalp Procedures

The artist explained that her condition had been aggravated by a chemical cut and an unsuccessful attempt at scalp micropigmentation. In cosmetology, a chemical cut describes severe hair breakage and loss that occurs when incompatible or overly harsh chemical treatments damage the hair shaft.

To disguise the thinning caused by alopecia, Gretchen had undergone scalp micropigmentation, a cosmetic procedure that deposits pigment into the skin to mimic the appearance of natural hair follicles. Instead of achieving the desired concealing effect, the procedure worsened the damage to the areas already affected by hair loss.

Alopecia causes the immune system or other biological factors to disrupt hair follicles, leading to partial or total hair thinning. Dermatological experts note that subjecting irritated or weakened follicles to tattooing or harsh styling chemicals can lead to further inflammation and hair loss.

Public Figures Speaking on Hair Loss

Gretchen is one of several prominent entertainment figures who have spoken openly about living with alopecia. The condition also affects fellow musical icons and performers in Brazil, including television host and recording artist Xuxa Meneghel, sertanejo singer Maiara, and actress Deborah Secco.

Internationally, American actress Jada Smith has also raised public awareness around alopecia, sharing her diagnosis and experiences with hair loss to help normalize the condition and reduce stigma for women facing similar challenges.

Rock The Mountain is an annual music festival hosted in Itaipava, a mountain district in Petropolis, Rio de Janeiro, known for bringing together diverse Brazilian musical acts. Gretchen, who rose to prominence in the late 1970s and remains a fixture of Brazilian pop culture, turned an unexpected wardrobe accident into a widely applauded demonstration of body positivity and openness.
