Hurlingham Club Angers Members After Hermès Party Takeover

The Hurlingham Club in Fulham has provoked fierce backlash from members after closing its grounds for the first time in history to host Hermès.

The exclusive South-west London private members' club shut down for a full day so the French luxury fashion brand could hold a private event billed as a very British Garden Party. Members, some of whom waited more than 25 years to join the institution, expressed outrage after being turned away at the gates.

Preparations for the gathering disrupted regular club activities prior to the closure, according to affected members. Works set up across the grounds prevented visitors from using the riverside walking path and accessing deckchairs by the croquet lawn.

One irate member described the takeover as "appalling," criticizing management for prioritizing commercial revenue over long-standing supporters. Another member said: "It's the first time ever the club has been closed. They've stooped to accepting money from a brand - a French one at that - and forgetting about the value of the members!" A third member noted feeling "deeply disappointed" by the full-day exclusion.

The lavish garden party was held to mark the opening of the fashion house's new Bond Street store, Maison 166. A star-studded guest list attended the event, including Doctor Who actress Jenna Coleman, tennis commentator Annabel Croft, musician Sir Bob Geldof, and supermodel Erin O'Connor.

Guests were entertained by pianist Jools Holland, who serenaded attendees from the keys, while DJ Fatboy Slim performed a set for the crowd. High-society figures and aristocrats in attendance included Emma Thynn, Marchioness of Bath, and Lady Martha Sitwell.

The temporary closure is not the only issue fueling member discontent at the Thameside venue in Fulham. Members have also voiced frustration over plans to demolish two of the club's existing tennis courts to construct two new padel courts. One member dismissed the project, saying: "Total waste. It'll go out of fashion in a week." The Hurlingham Club was contacted for comment.
