Singer and actress Idra Kayne has spoken about multiculturalism and public reactions to her past statements on diversity in Greece. Speaking to journalist Anastasia Kamvysi for Marie Claire magazine, Kayne reflected on how her vision of Greek identity was received by the public.
Kayne recalled a previous interview in which she said she envisions a Greece where Afro-Greeks are a common sight. She said no one should question a Black person who identifies as Greek or deny their identity, adding that this is normal in other European countries. She noted that fascists created a major uproar over her comments.
Multiculturalism and future generations
Addressing the need for explanations, Kayne stated that she has no personal desire to explain who she is. However, she said the public feels a strong need to learn about her background, her views, and why she speaks out, which she attributed to Greek social reality.
Kayne explained that Greece has only begun to be considered multicultural in the last 20 years, or possibly less. Because of this, she understands the need to clarify her position and said she is doing work for the next generation.
The interview also covered female representation in positions of responsibility, self-determination, and Kayne's personal goals.
