In a conversation with Casa.com.br, the artist shared his experiences, trajectories and creative processes.

“I think every new project that comes my way is the most challenging,” says the artist Carol Wang. And no less. His most recent feat that has gone viral on social media is the The world’s first black and white 2D Hello Kitty restaurant, which is being created in São Paulo. The project involves shaping the interior and everything inside – from the chairs to the air conditioner – to give the effect of a drawing.

In a conversation with Casa.com.br, the artist shared his experiences, trajectories and creative processes.

Carol was born in Londrina, in the interior of Paraná, already surrounded by the arts. Her father, the artist David Wang, and the rest of the family dealt with music, painting, tattoos, graphics and photography. At the age of 17 she moved to São Paulo to study Graphic Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts.

Faced with the challenges artists face today, advises Carol follow what excites you the most.

-

“I think it’s a matter of the person finding out what they like to do and delving into it. When you do something and you have that ‘time went too fast’ or ‘I really enjoyed the time’ feeling, ‘I felt happy’ , this is how when I paint I forget the time I feel a lot connected with me. I think this is the biggest secret. We may be inspired by other people, but the artist’s journey is not all the same (…) We must go with confidencedo our art and always try to learn and improve.”

-

In his case the passions are many. With sympathy and enthusiasm, she says that she loves try new thingstherefore his works are of the most varied: from paintings and sculpturespassing through collaborations with stores clothes and shoes, murals at airports and even tattoos.

-

This curiosity finds support in the active posture of technical learning. When I asked her how she dealt with the dilemma between formal lessons and her own style, Carol explains that the more techniques she masters, the greater her possibilities for expression.

-

“Regardless of our style, it is important to learn the technique because if you want to express something, you will be able to execute it. In regards to following a style, I follow the style much more emotion what a unique style. For example, I want to make a sculpture in someone’s honor, I follow that feeling and try to translate it into art. I like to study and learn all kinds of techniques. I don’t want to limit myself, I want to learn and know more”

Reflecting on her creative processes, the artist comments that when she started producing video content for social networks, showing the “making of” of each work, she felt closer to people. Eventually, the stories surrounding each piece become part of the art.

“I believe that the artistic process is very important, not just the final result. When I started sharing about myself on social media, about the process and not just the finished work, I felt so much more connected with people and I think people with me. It’s an exchange of information, the brush I use, the things that happen while I paint.”

-

He told us his saga when he painted a mural at Guarulhos airport. “I went to paint at the Guarulhos airport and the paint was leaking everywhere! It happens! I filmed it, recorded it and in that moment the desperation sets in, but then when it passes, we realize that it’s part of the process. Not everything will be perfect, there are stories to tell!”

-

When asked about the mental journey of each work, Carol says that she divides it into two moments, one of “convergence” and another of ” Divergence“. The first is a brainstorming session where you freely explore all the possibilities that piece can have; the second is the time to separate the ideas and think about how to make them.

-

“In the ‘convergence’ I open my mind and throw all the ideas. Whatever happens, I limit myself to nothing. In the second part, which I call ‘divergence’ is the moment when I will start filtering : what is useful, what I can do. It’s time to get practical, think about what I’ve learned, or think about what I can learn.”

Conversations with clients and the subject to be portrayed can also be part of the ideation.

-

“When I paint a pet, for example, I always ask for photos, lots of photos, a description and, if possible, a video. Then we define a color that represents the animal. There are those who are blue, with a calmer personality Others have a super colorful background! personality.”

You animals, incidentally, are a great constant in Carol’s collection. Since she was a child she has had a special relationship with animals and painting them is something she loves. Among which, on the wall of her studio, during the interview, she accompanied us with a large painting of Frida, her companion.

-

“The neighborhood I was born in had a lot of abandoned puppies. I was that kid who picked them up, went to school, ran a lottery to raise money for food, took them to the vet and then tried to give them a home (… ) When I arrived in São Paulo, I thought ‘what am I going to paint?’ and I chose to paint something that I like. So I started to paint animals. To this day, what I like to paint the most are animalsContinue to support rescue and adoption efforts, as she knows the hardships.

Last year, Carol received a more than special invitation: to host the show Art attack which is returning to Disney+ with a new format.

“When they called me, it was a shock! I was painting a wall, 6 meters above the ground, when they called me. I cried, for me it was something great! It was an incredible experience, we spent four months at record in Argentina and the episodes will be released this year happiness and great responsibility pass on to children something that was important to me when I was a child”.

During our conversation it was hard to think of anything Carol hasn’t done yet, but to wrap up, I asked her about her plans for the future, or something she wants to do that she hasn’t done yet.

-

“I have a big dream of paint a gable!” big dreams, being able to paint a building.”

-

I’m sure we’ll see a lot more of Carol Wang out there, both on television, on street walls, in themed restaurants, in art galleries and, no doubt, on the gables of São Paulo buildings.
