“Rain” of stuffed animals

The toys thrown by the fans, which created a veritable “rain” of soft toys, are actually donations for the child victims of the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on February 6th. So far, 50,000 people have died as a result of the natural disaster.

“Our fans organized a significant event called ‘This toy is my friend’ during the match to boost morale to the children affected by the earthquake. […] The fans threw scarves, caps and soft toys to give to the children affected by the earthquake”the Besiktas club said in a statement.

“The materials needed for our earthquake-affected citizens, including soft toys, are being prepared for shipment. We will continue to work together until our wounds heal. We are always with you”the club said in a Twitter post.

Before the start of the match, during the physical warm-up, the players showed up on the pitch with the names of the cities affected by the earthquake imprinted on their shirts.

When the match reached 4 minutes and 17 seconds, the referee blew his whistle and play was stopped. In fact, this was a further tribute to the victims of the earthquake, since 4:17 in the morning on 6 February is the time that marked the start of the tremors. At this moment, the stadium was filled with applause.
