A National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) this Wednesday 1st removed the mandatory use of masks in airports and on planes, while continuing to recommend their use in these environments, especially for the most vulnerable, people with respiratory symptoms and their contacts.

The agency’s board, made up of rapporteur, Daniel Pereira, and directors Alex Machado, Rômison Rodrigues Mota, Meiruze Sousa Freitas and Antônio Barra Torres, voted unanimously to repeal the rule.

According to Daniel Pereira, the current epidemiological scenario, with the reduction in the number of hospitalizations and new cases of Covid, allows the health provision to be updated.

At the time of the vote, director Alex Campos reiterated that masks continue to be important in the fight against the pandemic and that they continue to be recommended for people with respiratory symptoms.

Director Meiruze Freitas stressed that vaccination is the best tool against Covid and that masks continue to be recommended for the most vulnerable people. He also recalled that Anvisa could again adopt more restrictive measures, depending on the pandemic scenario.

The wearing of masks was in effect between 2020 and August 2022, when it was abolished, but was re-implemented in November 2022.
