The universe of paints is wide, in addition to the infinity of colors, and there is also a wide variety of finishes and models. With some simple tips, it is possible to clarify doubts on the subject and ensure beautiful environments. So we spoke to the architect Fernando Angelofrom Estúdio Cipó, and we list important information to help you in this choice:
1. Acrylic paint
Ideal for masonry walls, acrylic paint works well indoors and out. Three finishes are available: satin, semi-gloss and matte. The material is easy to wash, just a damp cloth is enough to clean it, reducing the need for maintenance. To avoid bubbles during the drying process, it is important to check that surfaces are adequately waterproofed before painting.
2. Enamel paint
Used for wood and metal surfaces, the polish is more durable and has a longer drying time. Usually oil based, they are generally suitable for doors, plinths, furniture and handrails. “Today it is already possible to find water-based enamels, but the finish is not as smooth and in comparison less durable than the original version,” explains Fernanda.
3. Latex paint
Suitable for indoor environments only, the latex paint is water-based and quick drying. It is a great option for application to plaster, has mold resistance characteristics, but has a slight odor. When painting, it is important to ensure that the surface to be applied is very clean.
4. Epoxy paint
Due to its high friction resistance, epoxy paint is the best option for high traffic environments, such as garages, hospitals, sports fields and schools. Its application goes beyond walls, it can be used as a floor covering, being much cheaper than flooring.
5. Matte, glossy or textured?
The matte finish is ideal for more discreet settings and helps hide slight imperfections on the wall.
With the gloss the opposite happens, the model highlights the texture of the surface on which it was applied. There is no need for finishing, and its maintenance and cleaning are more convenient.
Finally, the texture is the right choice for those who want to create different shapes and finishes. There are a multitude of designs for applying this type of paint, which also offers high durability and protects the masonry from moisture.
6. Colors and finishes
Light tones go well with all types of finishes, but the dark ones don’t. For stronger shades, such as red, the ideal is not to use glossy finishes! In these cases, more discreet finishes, such as matt ones, are more suitable.
7. Outdoor areas
Weather exposure is greatest outdoors. Therefore, for these places, textured, lime and rubberized paints are excellent.
8. Planning
Before starting any renovation, it is important to analyze the room, the type of material and the state of the walls. In the kitchens, durable and easy-to-wash paints make everyday life easier for the residents. In rooms, discreet tones help hide imperfections and are more welcoming.
