Housewives are still a significant part of the population and have social security entitlements. According to the latest data published by the IBGE, in 2019 7% of the Brazilian population declared themselves housewives, i.e. the person who takes care of their home without working outside the home, developing home care activities. And one way to access INSS benefits is to contribute to the institution if you wish.
“The housewife’s social security rights guarantee very important and fundamental rights, especially when she is experiencing a health problem or when she is close to retirement age and has to stop working,” explains the founding social security lawyer partner of Brisola Advocacia, Isabela Brisola.
Dedication equal to that of a conventional job
What is clear, given what the specialist points out, is that, regardless of the type of work, domestic activities and functions also require dedication on the part of women and, in many cases, are as recurring as formal work – even if it involves family treatment. .
Therefore, it is important that women contribute to the INSS to have a benefit at the end of life or in a delicate moment.
“Women go through different stages in their lives: either when they have a baby or when they have a health problem that strikes them unexpectedly. Also, age advances for everyone and can prevent them from staying at work”, exemplifies Isabela, noting that many housewives do not know that they can contribute to the INSS and have difficulties due to the lack of organization for these moments.
Forms of contributions to the INSS of the housewife
Housewives can contribute to social security in various ways, through the conventional contribution, the simplified model and also the optional low-income contribution, which requires compliance with requirements.
- • Conventional
The model is for that housewife who wants to retire above the minimum wage. The pay rate is 20% of the minimum wage. Payment is made through the Social Security Guide (GPS), which can be paid monthly or quarterly;
- • Simplified
The plan is for those who want to retire on the minimum wage. In this case the contribution will be equal to 11% of the fare and payment will also be made via GPS;
- • Optional low income
In this case it is important to meet the following requirements: belonging to a low-income family (monthly income up to two minimum wages); be part of a family nucleus enrolled in the CADÚnico and whose situation has been updated in the last two years; have no paid employment; they engage in domestic work in their own homes or do not have their own income. Here the rate will be 5% of the minimum wage.
What are the rights that the INSS grants to housewives?
After the 2019 pension reform, the housewife will have to meet two requirements to be entitled to a pension: age and minimum contribution. You must therefore be 62 years old and have contributed for 15 years, considering the payment of contributions to the INSS between 5% and 11%.
However, at retirement age, if the woman has never paid contributions and has a low per capita family income (1/4 of the minimum per capita wage), she can apply for the BPC/LOAS Assistance Allowance in the amount of a minimum monthly wage .
In addition to these entitlements, this section of the population may be eligible for sickness or disability pension assistance provided they meet the benefit requirements.
“If the woman paid the INSS before the Social Security Reform, she must see if she is in the transitional rules for retirement by age,” recalls Isabela.
