Why can’t Virginia foundation be classified as a dermomake?

The expert points out that the tests carried out by WePink are insufficient to demonstrate the effectiveness of the foundation in skin care

Last week’s topic was entrepreneur and influencer Virginia’s controversial base, announced for R$ 200. .

The expression was accompanied by information that the product would have several benefits, including the fight against “premature aging, expression lines and oiliness”.

But does dermomake exist?

First, you have to understand that this is a commercial term: scientifically speaking, there is no trick with this specification.

“The market uses it to designate a product that has a make-up effect and, at the same time, has active ingredients in its formulation and consecratedly used in the cosmetic industry to improve the texture and quality of the skin, moisturize and reduce dark spots and fine lines,” explains dermatologist Renata Sitonia, professor, lecturer in courses for doctors and conferences on aesthetic dermatology and a member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology and the Brazilian Society of Dermatological Surgery.

Can a cosmetic product offer such benefits?

The doctor confirms yes, because nowadays the scientific evidence “is all in favor of skin care”. “It is known that the use of suitable products can, in addition to delaying the process of the appearance of wrinkles and sagging, help in the treatment of skin diseases, such as acne, dermatitis and melasma,” he points out.

Is the Virginia base handling it?

As Renata explains, it is not possible to know. This is because the WePink brand claims that the formulation of the foundation contains vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and vegetable squalene as skincare actives. These substances usually help in skin hydration, acting as antioxidants and soothing.

“However, the concentration, i.e. the quantity of each of these components within the formula is not communicated, which raises doubts about the effectiveness, since the product is registered with Anvisa as a Grade I cosmetic”.

For products at this tier, the tests required by the agency are for safety, not necessarily efficacy. That is, cosmetics such as WePink foundation have been shown not to cause health problems for those who use them, but they have not needed to demonstrate that they are effective in counteracting skin aging.

How to choose the right foundation for the face?

The first step is to identify your skin type: it can be dry, oily, combination or mature. In the latter case, foundations with a glow finish are the most accepted, for example, for hydrating and less marking expressions.

“Those with oily or combination skin should choose a foundation with a matte effect. The sunscreen for face, neck and scalp should be a teaspoon. And this includes if the sunscreen already reaches the base”, indicates the dermatologist.

It is worth remembering that it is important to test the foundation before buying it, after all the color of the product oxidizes after application and, therefore, can change within a matter of hours. In that case, the ideal is to try it in the store and wait about two hours to find out if the result has been satisfactory for your skin type.

What to consider when choosing foundation, sunscreen or hyaluronic acid?

When it comes to foundation, the most important thing is the effect you seek with the use of the product. Already skin care and sun protection should be done separately.

“Hybrid products with sunscreen and make-up in general have a very small amount of active ingredients, which cannot be considered sufficient to treat the skin. They are ideal for having an effect”, warns the specialist. The recommended amount for filters is one teaspoon.
