From awakening to sleep, many people use meditation as a wellness tool, but the practice isn’t just for relieving everyday stress, it’s linked to concentration. Among the various daily distractions, for some, social networks are singled out as the main culprit – Brazil is the 3rd country in the world that uses most platforms of this type – which makes the pursuit of mindfulness a challenge.

Have you heard of mindfulness? The specialist in the area, Luiza Bittencourt, explains what it is about and what the advantages of the technique are.

What is Mindfulness?

β€œIt’s more than just meditation, it’s a way of life, it’s living in the present moment without judgement. It’s being more present in your activities, changing habits, learning to welcome your most challenging feelings. It has no ties to any religion.”

Mindfulness is living in the present with full awareness of the moment.

Why can employing mindfulness be difficult?

β€œBecause creating a habit is a challenge. But I always tell my students: choose your challenge. It is also a great challenge to live stressed outanxious, not being able to sleep, not living well… and really without regularity there are no real changes in the brain.”

How does awareness positively affect the brain?

β€œThe regular practice of meditation (Mindfulness) strengthens the areas of the brain related to attention, reasoning, memory and emotional self-regulation. Have you ever heard of neuroplasticity? The brain is constantly “reshaped” throughout life: by our thoughts, emotions and experiences.

Imagine your brain as a huge energy network, with billions of streets that light up every moment you think, feel or experience something. The focus of our attention is that it determines which neural networks (streets) will be strengthened and which will be weakened.

What is the purpose of the practice?

β€œIt’s simple: if you pay attention. You don’t have to relax, you don’t have to feel a certain way. It’s time to realize the present moment exactly as it is, with no fight and no flight. The benefits come from this awareness of the here and now”.

What are the benefits of mindfulness?

β€œOn a regular basis, the practice can: reduce stress and anxietyincrease concentration, increase the feeling of well-being, improve the quality of sleep, relieve chronic pain, develop self-regulation and emotional intelligence, increase creativity…”

How to practice mindfulness?

β€œWe can’t control our thoughts, emotions or life situations, but we can choose not to get carried away by it all and reduce the activation of the amygdala. [ativada quando nos sentimos em situaçáes de ameaΓ§a ou estresse]. We cultivate clarity and intuition, knowing when to slow down, and thus play an active and powerful role in how our brains develop. In the same way that we can change our bodies with exercise, we can change our brains with mindfulness practice.”
