“The more colorful the dish, the healthier it is”. This sentence is already known to all, however, as much as doctors persist in pressing that button, with the rush of everyday life, many people end up consuming almost always the same foods. Thus they forget that changing the menu is good for the palate – which begins to appreciate other flavors and textures – and for health, since each food has its benefits.

All health benefits from dietary variety, and that includes hair, too.

“Sometimes people ‘search’ why their hair is falling out so much, but end up forgetting that rather than taking a ‘miracle pill’ to regrow healthy strands, it is better to go the other way, go back to roots, and have an adequate diet,” explains the doctor and trichologist Ademir Carvalho Leite Junior.

The less packaging, the healthier it is.

To find out what these foods are without having to make an appointment is simple: remember that the less packaging, the healthier. That is: meat, eggs, fruit, vegetables and cereals dominate the diet that fights hair loss.

“Fortunately, many people are treated by a nutritionist to maintain their ideal weight. For those who already carry out this monitoring, the work takes place with the professionals together: the trichologist indicates the foods that can satisfy the needs of that patient’s hair and the nutritionist adapts to the established diet”, says the trichologist.

This cross reference is essential for combating hair loss.

Red meat is important for hair health

News stories appear from time to time that food X or Y is the bad guy of the day, with countless lists of myths and truths circulating and, not always, true.

“The only real bad guys are ultra-processed foods, which don’t help in any way. They satisfy hunger instantly and that’s it. They are extremely low in nutrients and directly contribute to obesity. Furthermore, its regular consumption opens the door to numerous diseases,” explains the doctor.

Leaving aside the family of processed products, the premise is the same for all other foods: consume with conscience, remembering not to exaggerate with the dose in any of them. This is the case with red meat, so loved and hated at the same time.

“We have to put aside some negative attributes and know how to value the positive ones. Red meat, for example, is the most important protein source when it comes to hair health,” she exemplifies.

According to Ademir, some cheap foods that are very rich sources of vitamins for capillary health are eggs and offal or viscera, such as liver, kidneys and gizzards. They are often overlooked in daily food.

The ideal list and superfoods

To counteract hair loss from the plate, the trichologist lists the foods that must be part of the shopping list:

  • • Red meat
  • • White meat
  • • fish
  • • liver
  • • viscera
  • • milk
  • • Yogurt
  • • cheese
  • • egg
  • • Brazil nuts
  • • bean
  • • peanuts
  • • pumpkin seed
  • • oats
  • • flax seed
  • • pea
  • • broccoli
  • • cauliflower
  • • avocados
  • • banana
  • • grape
  • • orange

  • • Garlic and onion

This selection is rich in protein, selenium, zinc, chromium, iron, fiber, pyridoxine, biotin, zinc, vitamins, omega 3 and 6 and antioxidants.

It is necessary to go back to the roots and have an adequate diet, says Dr. Ademir Carvalho Leite Júnior

The doctor also lists superfoods, rich in minerals, vitamins, phytocompounds, antioxidants, proteins and good quality fats: green tea, quinoa, lentils, nuts, açaí, kiwi, blueberries, peppers, watermelon, avocado, sweet potatoes, chard, spinach, salmon, olive oil, goji berries, chlorella and even chocolate – only in the bitter version.

“The care in choosing food goes far beyond the concern to keep fit. Each one on this list has potent bioactive compounds in promoting overall health and preventing disease. Proper nutrition contributes significantly and directly to the achievement of healthy hair and good health in general”, concludes the trichologist.
