In the current cast of “Dança dos Famosos”, from “Domingão com Huck”, Rafa Kalimann decided to talk about how dancing has benefited his mental health. The influencer has been suffering from panic syndrome for five years.

“At the turn of the year it escalated a lot, so I went through a sensitive phase in relation to that, but paying close attention, with the medical follow-up, all very well. But, really, it was a big difference when I started doing ‘Dança’, I activated something here, inside me, very precious, to throw myself, I think something new… I challenge myself and my head, everything changes. So, I didn’t have a panic attack [desde então]”, he has declared.

Classified as one of the types of anxiety disorder, the syndrome is characterized by the occurrence of sudden and intense episodes of fear or physical discomfort. Many of these moments are associated with symptoms such as palpitations, sweating, tremors, fear, shortness of breath and the feeling of imminent death, as explained by psychiatrist Jaqueline Bifano.

But how does dance help minimize these symptoms?

This is not to say that dance alone can act as a treatment for psychological problems. Jaqueline points out that disorders such as panic disorder tend to be multifactorial and complex, thus requiring multidisciplinary treatment with professional follow-up.

“However, it is possible to state that the regular practice of physical activities, such as dancing, is beneficial for emotional well-being and helps in the treatment of psychological illnesses, combined with an individualized treatment strategy and accompanied by a duly trained professional – psychiatrist and psychologist “, points out.

reward scheme

Talking about the importance of competition for his health, Rafa underlined how he feels driven by challenges. “It’s almost like a table for me. It’s a victory when I can overcome it, day after day. So, Dança is doing me a lot of good,” she said emotionally.

For psychiatrist Julia Trindade, who has an advanced degree in behavioral neuroscience, this makes perfect sense. The professional explains that, by placing himself in a scenario of exposure, training, setting and exceeding goals, the person awakens the sensation of the reward scheme. «New challenges can help precisely because they create new stimuli, create new connections», she summarizes.

“On top of all there is a lot of breathing. To dance I need to breathe and those who have a panic attack start to hyperventilate, the air does not enter”, completes the doctor who sees the practice of dancing as a combo for those who suffer of this type of disorder because it offers the feeling of success in an activity, exercise, and improved breathing.

What is the conventional treatment for panic disorder sufferers?

In addition to follow-up with a psychologist and psychiatrist, the individual may use anti-anxiety medications, antidepressants, and cognitive behavioral therapy. Complementary therapies such as medications and progressive muscle relaxation are also indicated. The practice of physical activity, for Giulia, is fundamental. “One of the pillars of care,” she emphasizes.
