Between reason and emotion, the way out…

In the stories, each hero and heroine has their own tools to deal with the vulnerabilities and battles that life imposes, such as the fight against “villains, monsters and dragons”. One of the most famous of these tools is the sword, which we can find in myths such as Gram or Excalibur, or even in one of the most complex sentences of Jesus: “Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace, but the sword” (Mt 10:34).

The sword in tradition

Traditionally, the figure of the sword is associated with the element of Air, linked to thoughts, which until then were immaterial, but which, driven by actions, create their forms in the world. This tool has become a symbol of decisiveness, determination, confidence and initiative. It is the power of logic and rationality that, when used well, offers the best possible direction, as it takes us out of life’s vulnerable situations, even if, in reality, they are our own inner battles. Without this well-developed capacity, life easily resembles a tangled mess of confusing perceptions and conflicting needs and feelings.

Each person faces himself first

Gradually another being emerges within us, something that often opposes what we are used to being and thinking. We begin to distinguish, delimit and separate things and we begin to live with the discomfort of carrying the sword, because it is the weight that gives us responsibility for making choices. This requires taking risks boldly and, above all, preserving justice – after all, the edge of a sword is equal on both sides.

However, because of this responsibility, there are those who prefer to remain safe in what they have learned, in habitual norms, in the confusion of viewpoints and prejudices, externalizing their responsibility to others, going beyond their limits to adapt and failing to recognize one’s personal values and protect one’s identity.

the spade suit

When we analyze the numerical face cards of the spades suit, we clearly see the battle of personal learning, the existential separation and the distinction of what is useful and what is not. According to our personal dynamics in the social world, we are faced with the discomfort of facing our illusions, using logic and reason that serve as wisdom to choose what is necessary.

If we used the suit of spades to understand our emotions, feelings, as well as rationalize our desires, most of the problems would be solved. This was Jesu s’ proposal when he said that he didn’t bring peace, but the sword, discernment, knowledge and discomfort and there is no growth without going through this.

For this reason, when we draw the cards of the suit of spades along a spread, it attracts attention, as it is the mirror of our conscience that asks for a little more discernment for everything we are looking for. These cards lack compassion, as we usually only want to feed and strengthen our ego with what we think is good for our lives. Their numbering and figures symbolize the degree of intensity of this behavior. For those who flee from self-knowledge it can be a martyrdom, but for those who seek to know themselves he knows perfectly well that the door is narrow and that this is the way that leads to eternal life.
