Is it possible to throw away a dried Easter cake after Easter: a clergyman’s answer

Before Easter, many people bake and buy so many Easter cakes that they don’t always have time to eat them. And they don’t know what to do with dried pastries for a holy feast.

In 2023, Easter is celebrated on April 16. A few days before that, families begin to actively prepare for the holiday: paint eggs, make Easter cottage cheese and bake (or buy ready-made Easter cakes).

Kulich is more an important symbol of the Easter holiday than the most sought-after dessert. Therefore, it is not surprising that many Easter cakes remain half-eaten for a long time and dry out.

Even if a person is far from having deep faith, the mere act of picking up and throwing away the Easter cake seems like a dubious undertaking. Better try to eat it!

However, the clergy see nothing wrong with getting rid of an unnecessary product in the house. It is not a sin, as many believed.

“Although the Easter cake is a festive product, it is still not part of the sacred service, not of the sacred bread. Of course, it happens that it dries out or deteriorates. And while it’s not good and you should treat the Easter cake with care, the decision to throw it away isn’t some kind of sin. You can throw it away as needed or give it to the birds for food,” – explain Priest of the Church of Peter, Metropolitan of Moscow in St. Petersburg Nikolai Savchenko.

According to the church representative, even if the Easter cake was sprinkled with holy water, it does not become a sacred object.

It is especially important not to try to finish the missing pastries, on which mold develops over time. Health risks are not worth trying to demonstrate your attitude to faith.

“We need to have the right attitude of respect, and the measure of that attitude is not to overstate our respect for holiday products,” the pastor stressed.
