Body fat is distributed differently in each person. Genetics, hormones and aging are some of the main reasons for these variations and in order to reduce fat in specific places on the body it is necessary to understand the differences between liposuction and weight loss.
Plastic surgeon Patrícia Marques explains how the procedure works and the importance of consulting a specialist for an evaluation before performing the surgery.
“During weight loss, fat cells – adipocytes – shrink in volume, but are not eliminated, and can increase again in the event of weight gain. Liposuction removes fat cells permanently,” he says.
But those who are overweight and need to lose weight are not recommended for lipo.
“The procedure does not help to lose weight and is only recommended for people with an adequate and stable weight and in good health, but who still have localized fat, such as in the abdominal region and on the hips,” says Patrícia.
Difference between liposuction and weight loss
While liposuction removes excess fat from certain parts of the body, weight loss usually occurs throughout the body, including intra-abdominal fat.
“There are some variations in the types of liposuction, but in general the excess fat is sucked up through metal cannulas and a machine that produces suction. The collected fat can be discarded or processed and deposited in certain areas of the body, a technique called lipoenxertia, to increase volume and harmonize the natural curves of the body,” he adds.
Liposuction does not remove visceral fat between the abdominal organs, as it only reaches the fat just under the skin, the subcutaneous fat. In this case, weight loss is the only way to reduce visceral fat, which is the most dangerous to health.
How long does liposuction take?
A liposuction procedure lasts from 2 to 5 hours and leaves small scars in inconspicuous places. Patrícia Marques reiterates the importance of not risking one’s health.
“Plastic surgery can only be performed in a hospital setting and by a doctor accredited by the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery. The choice of the professional is very important and is the first step in achieving the patient’s expectations ”, she concludes.
