Last Monday, the The Ministry of Health has expanded the vaccination against covid-19 with the bivalent dose for the entire population over 18 years old. Regional planning for extending vaccine coverage was the responsibility of municipalities, depending on the amount of vaccine available and the size of the eligible population in each city.

In the capital São Paulo, protection is offered to people aged 50 and over and other priority groups (see list below). According to the Municipal Secretariat of Health (SMS), São Paulo received 161,000 immunizer doses last Tuesday, but the number is insufficient to serve all those who can be vaccinated.

According to the town hall, 1,119,377 doses of bivalent vaccine have been applied in the capital up to this Wednesday and the opening for new age groups will take place on the basis of the receipt of new batches of vaccine.

According to experts, the bivalent vaccine is the most efficient among those available because it induces the production of antibodies against the original strain of the SarsCov-2 virus and also against the new variants that emerged during the pandemic and are now prevalent.

In a statement, the municipal health secretary, Luiz Carlos Zamarco, said that the distribution of the remaining immunizers avoids the risk of wasting vaccines. “It provides proper targeting of remaining doses,” he said.
