You main symptoms of stomach cancer are: difficulty swallowing, reflux, weight loss, vomiting, indigestion, stomach pain and nausea. Endoscopy is the main resource for diagnosing the disease and the main risk factor is infection with the bacterium Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori).

There is a large number of individuals with H. Pylori in the Brazilian population, but the percentage of people who will develop cancer is quite small. Attention should arise in cases diagnosed with the association of the presence of bacteria and other diseases, such as atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia.

Gastritis can be a risk factor for developing cancer, but most diagnoses are unrelated to developing cancer, with the exception of atrophic gastritis, which occurs when antibodies attack the stomach lining. This disease is easily found during an endoscopic examination. Therefore, in case of persistent stomach pain, it is advisable to consult a specialist.

You also need to be careful with gastroesophageal reflux. When stomach acid comes into contact with the esophagus, it can change its lining, causing diseases such as esophagitis, which can increase the risk of developing cancer. But not all gastroesophageal reflux is a risk factor. Endoscopy is the recommended examination to evaluate patients with reflux and possible complications of the disease.

Several foods help prevent stomach cancer, such as fruits, vegetables and legumes. Citrus fruits such as orange, acerola and pineapple, for example, are rich in vitamin C, an antioxidant that neutralizes the action of free radicals. Flavonoids, found in berries and green tea, also have antioxidant properties. Garlic, rich in allicin, has the ability to inhibit DNA mutations, reducing the risk of malignant cell growth.
