Knee pain can be common, but it’s even more common for runners. Try to figure out what could be the problem
Even without exercising yourself, it’s not hard to get knee pain. After all, it supports a lot of weight, and just like any other joint in our body, it can get uncomfortable at some point. However, for runners, the risks of pain are even greater.

Iliotibial band syndrome: The most common cause of knee pain
The most common cause of knee pain when running is called iliotibial band syndrome. It is characterized by pain on the lateral aspect of the knee that begins with intensification of running training and, as it progresses, may also appear with faster walking. It can be extremely limiting, significantly compromising sports performance.
According to orthopedic spine and regenerative medicine specialist Dr. Luiz Felipe Carvalho, the site of the pain is related to the iliotibial band, which, as the name suggests, runs from the ilium (pelvis bone) to the tibia (leg bone).
“It is a structure that is frequently stressed during running and is directly related to the sporting gesture, the strength of the gluteal muscles, the abdominal core and the misalignments of the ankle and lower limbs as a whole”, he explains.
Again according to Dr. Felipe, the diagnosis is clinical and in rare cases MRI is required. It is indicated when there is diagnostic doubt or refractoriness of the condition.
“Treatment encompasses several spheres and can involve training interruption/reduction, physiotherapy, shock wave therapy, stretching, massage, among other devices. A good treatment program can undoubtedly get the runner back to his training with quality,” says Philip.
“When in doubt, don’t risk it. But don’t risk it at all. Always look for your trusted orthopedic surgeon”, underlines the doctor.
