An inspection carried out by the Instituto-Geral de Perícias (IGP) of Rio Grande de Sul on samples of Fugini brand tomato sauce revealed the presence of fungi and parasite eggs in the product. The clusters were collected for analysis in Viamão, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. The case is being investigated through an investigation launched by the Civil Police.

The delegate of the 1st Viamão Police Station, Jeiselaure De Souza, who is responsible for investigating the case, explained to the Earth which received on Wednesday 17 the reports relating to the histopathological examination of the tomato puree samples sent to the General Institute of Expertise.

According to the police authority, the investigation was launched after consumers in the Porto Alegre metropolitan region reported finding foreign bodies in the product.

According to the Civil Police, consumers have reported finding foreign bodies inside the tomato sauce in Viamão

Three different samples of the brand’s sauce were sent for an expert report, with different batches and presentations, and also purchased in different markets and neighborhoods, as evidenced by the Civil Police. On the other hand, the presence of fungal eggs and parasites was found in all the sauces.

“The result demonstrates that these sauces were actually contaminated by fungal eggs and parasites. And the response of the PGI to the product considered suitable for human consumption is precisely that food contaminated by fungi is not suitable, because it can associate with bacteria, produce toxins that are harmful to human health and even trigger or worsen allergic conditions. Furthermore, parasites can cause different types of infestation in humans,” said the delegate.

According to the police authority, the managers of the company have already been summoned for an interrogation and, possibly, the investigation into the case will be concluded in the next few weeks.

“Another question that has been asked over and over again concerns the types of mushrooms that have been found [no molho]. To obtain this information a microbiological culture would be necessary and the PGI does not have this service available. But that doesn’t interfere with the investigation. And also analyzing the context of the investigation and the data that have been brought in the three reports that we already have, there are sufficient elements for the outcome of the investigation. By emphasizing the presence of these fungi, these parasite fragments, we already have elements that indicate a problem with these products,” Jeiselaure highlighted.

At the end of March, the national health surveillance agency (Anvisa) suspended the production, sale, distribution and use of Fugini branded foods. The measure was taken after the inspection at the factory located in Monte Alto, in the hinterland of São Paulo. At the time, Anvisa said that, during the inspection, serious deficiencies were identified relating to hygiene, quality control and raw material safety, pest control and traceability. However, the decision was suspended in April.

OR Earth tried to contact Fugini at the email and phone number available on the site, but did not receive any response until the last update of this report. The space remains open for events.
