As the name indicates, the activity consists of practicing two sports, namely running and cycling. Unlike the twin mode, therefore, in this case swimming is excluded.

“It’s an interesting mode for anyone who would like to start competing in triathlon-like events, but isn’t yet feeling fit enough for aquatic stretches,” he points out. Monica Marques, technical director of the CIA Athletica group.

“Another point is when the colder months arrive and swimming becomes less appealing in an outdoor setting,” she adds.

Therefore, it is possible to underline that the duathlon is an interesting activity because it can be practiced completely indoors, with running on the treadmill and pedaling on an exercise bike.

What is a duathlon training like?

According to Monica, training is usually done from a standard distance.

“The initial part is the run, which gives way to the bike, and usually ends with another shorter run,” he explains.

“The distances covered are classified according to three methods, established by the International Triathlon Union (ITU), which also defines the general lines of duathlon competitions”, he completes.

Are they:

  • Sprints: shorter, starting with a 5km run, interspersed with a 20km bike ride and an additional 2.5km run;
  • Standard: 10km run, 40km bike and 5km run;
  • Long distance: 10km running, 150km cycling and 30km running.

It’s worth remembering that since these are long trips, it’s important that each person sticks to their limit when training.

“Ideally those interested in practicing duathlon do not do running and cycling training separately, because if there is the intention to compete it is already possible to become familiar with the two modalities consecutively, conditioning what is necessary for competitions”, suggests Monica.

He continues: “Stretching before and after exercises is also very important for training and competitions, as it improves flexibility. Range of motion will be essential for a good performance.”
