A 16-year-old teenager who had been hospitalized with suspected spotted fever died on Tuesday night, the 13th. in Campinas, in the interior of São Paulo, according to the newspaper Folha de São Paulo. The young woman was at the same event as three others infected with the disease. The tests that should confirm or not the diagnosis of the disease in adolescents have not yet been disseminated.

Also on Tuesday evening, before the teenager’s death was announced, the municipality’s health department had confirmed that a 28-year-old woman, born in Hortolândia, had died of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. She died on June 8, the same day her boyfriends Mariana Giordano, 36, and Douglas Pereira Costa, 42, died.

The four were at a party on May 27, a Santa Margherita farm, in the district of Joaquim Egídio. The teenager was hospitalized on June 9, the day after the others who were infected died.

His case had already been reported to health surveillance as suspected Rocky Mountain spotted fever, dengue, leptospirosis or meningitis. However, the family only suspected this Tuesday that there was a connection to the event at the farm when they saw the repercussions in the press. The collected material is being analyzed at the Adolfo Lutz Institute.

With the cases, the Campinas health department said so this is an outbreak of spotted fever. Joaquim Egídio district is mapped as a risk area for the disease.
