Boy who woke up from coma after 16 days reveals question upon awakening

Video of Guilherme Gandra hugging his mother after waking up from a sound sleep has gone viral on social media. “Where is my mobile phone?” he asked

Upon awakening from his induced coma after 16 days, 8-year-old Guilherme Gandra had several questions. But the first one he decided to do was somewhat unexpected: “Where is my cell phone?”. The boy’s unusual question was revealed by himself to Fantástico, of Globo, in a report aired this Sunday 25. a video of him hugging his mother, Tayana Gandrastill in the hospital bed, minutes after waking from a sound sleep, he turned to social media.

It was their first meeting after more than two weeks of apprehension. On June 5, Guilherme was admitted to a hospital in west Rio de Janeiro with a cold that worsened into pneumonia. He needed to be intubated and spent 16 days in a coma.

The hospital environment, however, is not so strange for the boy. Diagnosed at birth with epidermolysis bullosaa rare disease that affects four out of a million children in the country, according to data from the Ministry of Health, Guilherme has a history of eight surgeries and 23 hospitalizations.

Epidermolysis bullosa, as can be seen from the report, is an autoimmune disease, not contagious and for which there is no cure. The disease is caused by an alteration of the protein responsible for the bond between the epidermis (the outer part that protects the body) and the dermis (the inner part made up of various types of tissue that perform different functions).

The skin becomes sensitive and fragile like a butterfly’s wings. For this reason it is also called Epidermolysis Bullosa butterfly disease, and children who have been diagnosed with the disease, butterfly children. The patient who lives with this condition is more predisposed to suffer from skin lesions, both on the external and internal part of the body, such as in the airways for example.

Guilherme’s mother, Tayana, who is a nutritionist, says her son has difficulty growing and gaining weight because some of the nutrients available in the body are used by the body to work on healing wounds.

Charismatic, devoted and to Vasco da Gama, Guilherme won over even the people he used to root for. One of these is from Vasco striker Guilherme Pec, who visited the boy in hospital and gave him a shirt from his beloved club.

Another moment that made the boy’s eyes shine was when he received, from the hands of Rodrigo Dinamite, son of Roberto Dinamite, the greatest idol in the history of the Rio de Janeiro team, the number 8 shirt of the historic Vasco striker , who passed away in January, aged 68.

Symptoms of epidermolysis bullosa

The main symptoms of epidermolysis bullosa are blisters and skin lesions, which can appear soon after birth or in the first hours and days of life. Sometimes they are small blisters that appear in small numbers or can involve large body surfaces.

In more serious situations, the skin on one part of the body appears to be completely absent, especially on the feet and in the pretibial region. In some milder cases, epidermolysis bullosa doesn’t always give symptoms at birth, but the signs may become more obvious when the child begins to crawl, walk and run or when a young adult engages in strenuous physical activity.

Symptoms Of Epidermolysis Bullosa:

  • Blisters on the skin at the slightest touch;
  • Blisters in the mouth and/or eyes;
  • Scarring of the skin with a rough appearance and white spots;
  • Impact on nails;
  • hair thinning;
  • Reduced or excessive sweating.
