Architects Patricia Penna and Ana Rozenblit show how the tea or coffee trolley adds a special charm to the decor
When they were conceived, in Victorian England, their presence was synonymous with happy moments in the company of friends and family and their function was to support the drink consumed (and overrated) at the time: tea.
In present times, the cart continues with this essence of composing the furnishings of living environments, but with a new attribution: arranging the selection of drinks and accompanying glasses.

Even if it does not have wheels, the piece of furniture is indicated to make life easier for the host and guests, welcoming drinks in strategic points of the social areas, such as living room, breakfast room, dining room, veranda and gazebo.
Why have a tea or bar cart
The architect Patricia Penna, head of the studio Patricia Penna Architecture & Designshe is passionate about furniture and often uses it in her projects.
“Its presence goes beyond the attribution and reaches the status of a decorative element, acting as an occasional support in certain events or remaining permanently in the decoration of the environment”, describes the professional who, in over two decades of career, has observed the new contours of the piece and the plurality while also exhibiting objects that the residents like.
However, however versatile the tea/bar trolley may be, it underlines that care is essential in order not to accumulate useless objects on a daily basis, resulting in a lack of character and saturation in its appearance.
Where to use a bar or tea cart
Carts are usually light furniture, easy to handle and can be taken to different environments, always in line with the occasion. At parties and family gatherings, for example, the trolley can be used as a bar; during dinner parties, a pitcher of water can be left with glasses so guests can help themselves, as well as supporting decorative items, such as a flower arrangement.
In this context they can also be allocated in different places of the residence, it is not necessary for them to appear in a static way. “The trolleys don’t have to fit in one room, they can be moved around as needed,” the architect points out Ana Rosenblitoffice manager Internal space.
Cart in the living room
The most accurate choice is to place the trolley in the living room or living room, as these social spaces are the vital center of a residence. In addition, the armchairs and sofas that commonly form part of these spaces serve as seating for enjoying the drinks offered in the trolley.
Cart in outdoor areas
For outdoor settings such as verandas, balconies, outdoor gourmet areas, patios and gardens, trolleys are also a great choice to complement the décor. However, due to the climate, some precautions are necessary, as advised by Patricia Pena.
“Being an open area, with the possibility of water and sun, weather resistant materials are best suited, such as aluminum and natural fibers,” he concludes.
