The most beautiful finger rings and jewelry can highlight skin in an area that usually goes unnoticed in daily grooming. In general, daily sunscreen is not used and moisturizer does not always cover the skin of the hands.

“When we talk about aging hands, we can divide them into affected areas. For example, the epidermis, the most superficial layer of the skin, suffers from dryness due to the external action of agents such as the sun, pollution and the fact that we wash our hands too often using products that aggravate these alterations”, he explains the plastic surgeon Beatriz Lassance, titular member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery.

“Under the epidermis we have the dermis, where there are collagen fibers, elastin, sebaceous glands and melanocytes, responsible for the production of skin pigments. However, the quality of these fibers changes over time, making the skin less elastic, thinner and, consequently, more wrinkled. Furthermore, lifelong unprotected sun exposure stimulates the production of pigment by melanocytes, thus leading to the formation of spots. Finally, we have adipose tissue, which has also been reduced over the years. All these alterations translate into a more wrinkled, flaccid, dry appearance and with more evident tendons, spots and veins”, completes the doctor.

But it is possible to treat these alterations with minimally invasive procedures, using injectables or technologies. We consulted experts to explain the best treatments for the four main changes.

Flaccid and wrinkled hands

To plump up hands that look wrinkled and flabby, injectables are needed. In case of flaccidity, for example, you can bet on the application of collagen biostimulators, such as calcium hydroxyapatite.

According to Beatriz Lassance, it causes a controlled inflammatory reaction to stimulate local collagen production. In case of deeper wrinkles, filling with fat, called lipoenxertia, can help.

“It’s also a great alternative to rejuvenate your hands. Fat grafting is a minimally invasive procedure in which a small amount of fat is removed from the patient’s body through liposuction. This fat is then prepared and injected back into the hands. In this way, in addition to filling, the procedure, which is definitive, also improves the quality of the skin due to the presence of stem cells ”, he adds.

Dry skin

Dry skin on hands is a big problem that arises due to the aging process. Fortunately, it is possible to circumvent it through the injectable application of the skinbooster.

“The skinbooster consists of injections of non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid, which, unlike the substance used in fillers, does not favor volume, but attracts water to the skin, improving its hydration, vigor and texture. Generally it is about three monthly sessions and the result lasts a year”, underlines the dermatologist Paola Pomerantzeff, a member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology.

Another possibility is with the HydraFacial hydrodermabrasion procedure.

“The procedure promotes an instant improvement in skin quality, helping to standardize tone and texture and increase skin firmness, vigor, smoothness and radiance. The patented Vortex-Fusion technology present in the tips has an exclusive spiral design capable of generating a vortex effect which, combined with the vacuum suction technology of the equipment, manages to easily expel and remove impurities from the skin while providing moisturizing solutions by the hands. The procedure is quick, completely painless, non-invasive and without downtime, so it doesn’t disturb your routine,” explains Ana Macedo, dermatologist, member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology and the Brazilian Society of Dermatological Surgery.

spots on the hands

To treat spots on the hands, dermatologist Abdo Salomão Jr. recommends Solon Vektra Pico technologies.

“This laser from the Solon platform is ultra-fast and targets spots by causing microfragmentation of the pigment, which breaks into much smaller pieces, which makes it easier for the body to eliminate them. Furthermore, this impulse is so fast that it hits the target (spots, tattoo pigments) without damaging the surrounding healthy tissue and without heating up the skin,” explains the dermatologist.

Another possibility is the use of Solon pulsed light (Expert Light). “It has an innovative system where it concentrates photons at specific wavelengths, so it is possible to focus on hemoglobin, melanin and this has a much greater performance in skin lightening, because you go specific to the target, different from others that are generic. It serves to lighten both melanin and hemoglobin spots. To lighten, one to three sessions are required, depending on the type of pigment, depth and quantity,” explains Abdo.

obvious veins

Those with highly visible veins on their hands can opt for procedures such as sclerotherapy and endolaser, which bring excellent results.

“In sclerotherapy, a foam with a slightly stronger product is applied to remove veins in the hand. Made with two syringes and a screw tap, this product is applied to the vein to be treated, always guided by ultrasound to follow its progression. When the foam comes into contact with the vessel wall, an intense inflammatory process is created which will heal the vein, transforming it into a fibrous cord which will be disconnected from the circulation,” explains vascular surgeon Aline Lamaita, member of the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Surgery Vascular.

In the case of the endolaser, the vein in the hand is punctured and a fiber is inserted into it through an introducer.

“One end of the fiber is placed inside the vein and the other end is connected to a laser or radio frequency device which will release energy to burn the vein. The fiber is then slowly withdrawn as the vein is cauterized. Interestingly, the vein is not removed, also becoming a fibrous cord that no longer participates in the circulation”, comments the vascular surgeon.

Finally, we must not forget about the photoprotection of the hands, after all, the skin of the region is constantly exposed to solar radiation.

“Sunscreen should be used every day and should have at least SPF 30. Also, to ensure its effectiveness, it is important that the product is reapplied every two hours or whenever there is contact with water, for example after hand washing,” concludes Abdo Salomão.
