Experts say there is no age limit. Facelifts are usually performed between the ages of 40 and 70.

In a recent interview, actress Sarah Jessica Parker, 58, said she “wasted the time” to get a facelift — the popular name for wrinkle surgery, rhytidectomy. “I think I missed the good old facelift you get at 44. But I always think. I ask people, ‘Is it too late?’” she said in an interview on The Howard Stern Show.
The thing is, contrary to what the actress believes, the Brazilian Association of Plastic Surgeons (BAPS) clarifies that there are no age restrictions. “There are many people in their 70s, for example, who undergo cosmetic procedures such as facelifts. Obviously, this must be taken into account when thinking about the extent and duration of the surgery and, therefore, the trauma to the body and its recovery. It is essential that the patient is in a fully healthy condition to undergo the procedure,” explains plastic surgeon Jair Maciel, Coordinating Member of the BAPS Face chapter.
The doctor also clarifies that the ideal age for the surgery is between the late 40s and early 50s, but this procedure can also be performed at the age of 70, bringing benefits to the patient.
Reverse the signs of aging on your face
BAPS highlights that a facelift is a surgery performed to reverse the signs of facial aging, with the aim of smoothing out wrinkles, facial lines and sagging, which give the face a younger, more rested appearance.
“Being able to embrace both the entire face and a specific area that generates greater discomfort for the patient, rhytidoplasty is performed through strategically located incisions, which allow the practitioner to reposition the tissues: the muscles and the skin”, says the doctor.
The incision can be made in different parts of the face, such as near the ear, on the scalp, in the temporal region or under the chin,” completes the doctor. In recent years, the procedure has evolved to ensure more natural results with the Deep Plane Facelift technique.
“Previously, face lifting procedures could result in a stretched and unnatural appearance. However, modern techniques focus on deeper approaches, repositioning the muscle layer and sparing some skin. Furthermore, surgeons also focus on restoring facial volumes, rather than simply stretching the skin,” Jair Maciel points out.
Precautions necessary for plastic surgery
According to BAPS, to perform plastic surgery, all precautions must be followed.
“It is our obligation, as conscientious physicians and surgeons, to guide our patients so that we know everything that motivated them and what led them to surgery, including from a laboratory perspective. Then the plastic surgeon will evaluate the patient’s nutrition, sleep, bowel function, how she copes with emotions and metabolic, hormonal and functional evaluations”, explains the plastic surgeon.
Patients who have any comorbidities, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, can operate, but as long as these conditions are fully controlled, the association warns.
“In the same reasoning, there is no age limit for undergoing plastic surgery, including aesthetic surgery, as long as the patient is in good health. Of course, very long operations, over 7 or 8 hours, have a greater risk of complications for both young and elderly people”, says the doctor.
non-invasive procedures
The actress also commented in the interview that she makes regular visits to the dermatologist with less invasive treatments, such as peels, to achieve brighter skin. However, the procedures are not exclusive.
“Many peels are done after plastic surgery to improve the quality of the skin. We can also use strategies with associations of lasers and other technologies both before and after plastic surgery ”, he points out.
Finally, BAPS reiterates that the plastic surgeon must always expose the patient, in a clear and transparent manner, to the risks of plastic surgery, which are inherent in any surgical treatment.
“The practitioner should not try to minimize or hide the risks, as the decision for plastic surgery must be made consciously by the patient. And the commitment to medical ethics can also lead the plastic surgeon to contraindicate a procedure when adequate levels of safety are not achieved”, concludes the doctor.
