Study shows benefits of almonds for memory
Researchers at Purdue University, Indiana, USA, conducted a 12-week study with 86 overweight/obese adults, who were divided into two groups on low-calorie diets for weight loss.
While one of the groups ate a diet enriched with the superfood, the other ate a nut-free diet. Additionally, each of them was offered either a high-fat lunch (with almonds) or a high-carbohydrate lunch (without almonds).
After lunch, participants were tested for memory and attention. The observed result was that both groups had a decrease in post-lunch attention, regardless of macronutrient content.
However, people who ate the high-fat lunch had significantly less memory decline, suggesting that almonds may play an effective role in maintaining memory after meals.
That said, Richard Mattes, a Purdue University practitionerexplained that walnuts may moderate blood sugar levels after meals, which may explain their memory benefit.
This is because, by reducing the glycemic impact of carbohydrates, they help maintain blood glucose concentration at optimal levels for memory tasks.
