A study by German and British researchers found that sex has a similar effect to nasal decongestants.

The research, published in 2021 in Ear, Nose & Throat Journal, was conducted by teams from Heidelberg University Hospital, Germany, and York District Hospital, England. The study won the IgNobel Prize for Medicine, created by the scientific humor magazine Annals of Improbable Research, awarded to authors of unusual experiments, discoveries and studies.
I study
The research followed 18 heterosexual couples at five different times:
- Before sex;
- Immediately after orgasm;
- 30 minutes after intercourse;
- One hour later;
- Finally, three hours after the intimate moment.
For the results to register, both had to orgasm. The next day, the same moments were recorded after participants applied a decongestant nasal spray.
Results
Doctors used specific devices to measure the passage of air in the participants’ noses. With this they have achieved positive results: inhalation through the nose has improved significantly with an effect similar to that produced by the nasal spray. However, that feeling only lasted for 60 minutes.
