Botulinum toxin is no longer associated with the treatment of lines and wrinkles, i.e. directed for corrective purposes, and is now applied even before these first signs of aging, with a preventive focus. But it’s worth it? The concept of early application of botulinum toxin is to treat the facial muscles that you use most frequently to prevent wrinkles from forming.

“Botulinum toxin is one of the best known beauty treatments. The substance promotes a neuromuscular block, preventing nerve synapses from reaching the muscle and concentrating on the site. Removing muscle movement from the face results in a reduction of expression lines and prevents a dynamic wrinkle from becoming a static wrinkle,” he explains. Paul Rubezplastic surgeon graduated from UNIFESP, member of BAPS (Brazilian Association of Plastic Surgeons) and of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS).

“This is the most used treatment for wrinkles, but it also allows for a little eyebrow lift,” adds the doctor.

How the Botox application works

As for the preventive application, second Claudia Merlocosmetology specialist doctor of the BWS Institute, the toxin prevents static wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the eyes.

“Botulinum toxin paralyzes the muscle and the patient does not create dynamic and consequently static wrinkles. From the moment these wrinkles are already established, the treatment becomes impossible. Yes, we can lighten it, but a dermal fracture has already been established,” says the doctor.

There is still the benefit of improving the appearance of the skin, which is more radiant. It is a treatment not indicated by age, but rather necessary, according to specialists.

“I never set the age to start preventing static wrinkles with botulinum toxin, as some people are less or more expressive, so when I talk to my patient during the consultation I watch all the miming without him knowing I’m doing this assessment. So, as soon as this muscle strength increases and dynamic wrinkles are very frequent, I already indicate botulinum toxin, regardless of age”, claims Cláudia Merlo.

Regularity ranges from 4 to 6 months

In addition to the indication, the regularity also depends from case to case, ranging from 4 to 6 months. In the case of very expressive individuals, who tend to be exposed to the sun frequently, bodybuilders, smokers or men, it can be done every 4 months.

Preventive botulinum toxin can be applied to anger lines (between the eyebrows), frown lines (forehead), and crow’s feet. Dr. Cláudia also mentions the areas of the oral angle depressor (which favors a drooping lip angle) and the chin.

There is no risk to health, provided it is performed by a qualified professional, under adequate hygienic conditions, respecting the dose and dilution for each indication. To get away from the frozen and artificial aspects of the appearance, it is necessary for the injector to be a doctor and have extensive training and experience in performing these injections. Staying away from “botox parties” also helps.

“Even if it is a non-surgical procedure, the botulinum toxin must be performed by a qualified professional in a sterile environment,” concludes Cláudia Merlo.
