Sex is human reproduction, health, pleasure and still today a cause of taboo, shame and repression. The act is so important and raises so much discussion that it has earned its place on the Brazilian calendar.
Below, Terra explains how the date was created and demystifies myths and truths about the subject with the help of two specialists. Watch:
How was Sex Day born?
Sex Day was made official in Brazil on September 6th. The choice refers to the numbers that mark the day and month of the year alluding to 69, a well-known sexual position.
The date – now celebrated commercially and informally – was the brainchild of a marketing campaign by Olla. As IstoÉ Dinheiro recalls, in 2008, the condom brand asked: “if there is Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Children’s Day, why isn’t there Sex Day?”. The joke worked and, since then, the celebration has been repeated.
Myths and truths about sex
Sexual slimming?
Sex is not considered a form of treatment for obesity, emphasizes gynecologist Marcelo Cavalcante, specialist in Human Reproduction. But he points out that the practice can actually be an ally in weight loss, since it is considered a physical activity that has a calorie loss.
Is sex good for health?
Yes and the doctor explains why. “The practice has an impact on the emotional relationship of the couple, with the release of various substances that activate the nervous system, giving a feeling of pleasure and relaxation, avoiding stress”.
Does the female orgasm last longer?
Both the gynecologist and the clinical sexologist Dani Fontinele confirm this. The difference is small: while the male orgasm lasts 3 to 10 seconds, the female one lasts 10 to 15 seconds.
“It can be prolonged because, if the stimulus continues, it could even become a multiple orgasm and reach 20 seconds, 30 seconds. Then we have various reports, which have no scientific content”, reflects Dani, also a sexologist.
Cavalcante also adds the difference in “refractory time” between male and female orgasms. In men this interval is long, while in women it is short, which allows for repeated orgasms in a short period of time.
Can pregnant women have sex?
In general, yes. “But there are some conditions during pregnancy that a woman must be careful of and even avoid sexual activity,” underlines the gynecologist.
For example, she cites cases of bleeding, contractions outside the labor period or when water breaks and amniotic fluid leaks. “Having intercourse during this time can increase your risk of infection.”
Does contraceptive use decrease libido?
According to the doctor, this varies depending on how the patient will react to the hormonal contraceptive method. This analysis should be done with the gynecologist.
Is masturbation bad?
This is a myth. The sexologist points out that masturbation does not cause harm to people, except when it comes to compulsion. “Then he will have other comorbidities, other types of compulsions, and one of these could be masturbation, the person masturbates until they create wounds, hurt themselves, but these are rare cases”.
There is also no limit to the act. That is, there’s no problem masturbating more than once a day, as long as it doesn’t interfere with your routine and homework.
Is excessive consumption of pornography bad for sex?
Another myth. What harms sex is not the consumption of photography, but the lack of sex education.
The sexologist analyzes that since sex is not learned at home or at school, pornography plays this role. “So what is bad is watching a pornographic film of the mainstream and think it’s true, that it has to go like this. (…) When a person has real sex, she gets frustrated because she thinks it has to be like this,” she points out.
Is it possible to get pregnant during menstruation?
The answer is no. As Cavalcante explains, menstruation is the event in which the loss of the endometrium occurs, the layer that covers the uterus and where the implantation and fixation of the embryo takes place.
Therefore, as long as menstruation involves peeling of the endometrium and no bleeding for other reasons, it is not possible to get pregnant during this period.
Is communication essential to having a satisfying sex life?
REAL. And herein lies many problems between couples. “Women are ashamed to say what they like or don’t like. Sometimes they end up pretending and the man thinks he’s suffocating him,” comments Dani.
The sexologist underlines how essential it is for partners to get to know each other, know what they like and establish an honest dialogue. Only then will one be able to satisfy the other.
