How was the campaign born?
It is inspired by Mike Emme, a young American who committed suicide in September 1994. At the wake, family and friends distributed cards with yellow ribbons and inspirational quotes as a way to support emotionally disturbed people. The color of the ribbons was not chosen by chance, Mike had a yellow car and, therefore, was taken into action.
When did Yellow September appear in Brazil?
The campaign has been running in Brazil since 2015, when the Brazilian Psychiatric Association (ABP), the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) and the Center for the Enhancement of Life (CVV) embraced the initiative.
With a high volume of monthly internet searches, “Mental health” has been increasingly debated and seen as a crucial pillar for well-being and life quality of people. However, stigmas remain on the subject: this is indicated by a recent research conducted by the Instituto Cactus and AtlasIntel only 5% of Brazilians undergo therapy.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Brazil is one of the most worried countries in the world, given that other alarming ones are added: the population also suffers from a high rate of stress and the country has a high number of cases of the Burnout, the syndrome of physical, mental and emotional exhaustion.
