Tomorrow, June 12, is the Saint Valentine. A famous date, where couples in love take the opportunity to celebrate love. Among singles there are those who do not care about the date. But there are also those who end up feeling uncomfortable with the moment. Either way, a recent scientific breakthrough could generate an unlikely warning sign.

If you spend Valentine’s Day alone, the risk of death could be greater. At least that’s what a survey conducted by the university hospital in Würzburg, Germany identified. But for now, this is only valid for those who already have heart failure.

According to the researchers, single people who literally suffer from heart are at a greater risk of dying than married people with the same condition. This is due to the social support and “protection” that marriage can provide for the treatment of heart patients.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers analyzed 1,022 patients admitted to hospital with decompensated heart failure between 2004 and 2007. In total, 1,008 of these patients reported their marital status: 633 (63%) were married and 375 ( 37%) single, being 195 widowed, 96 never married and 84 separated or divorced. All of these people have been followed for 10 years.

Among patients who died during this period, being single was associated with a higher risk of death from all causes than being married. According to Fabian Kerwagen, author of the study, this connection between marriage and increased longevity reinforces the importance of the company.

“Social support helps people cope with long-term conditions. Spouses can help with drug adherence, encourage and help develop healthier behaviors, which can affect longevity,” Kerwagen said in a statement.
