Without proper treatment, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis can lead to hypothyroidism and cause dramatic metabolic changes.
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is a condition of chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland. It has an autoimmune origin, that is, the body itself produces antibodies against the gland, and is the main cause of the disease hypothyroidism.

According to Dr. Aline dos Santos Souza, endocrinologist and clinical doctor at Icaraí Hospital, in Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the gland gradually reduces the production of thyroid hormones, leading to hypothyroidism.
The people most affected by the condition are women in their 40s. However, the disease can also affect women of other ages, as well as men and children. The disease is commonly associated with a genetic condition (family history). Another risk factor is excessive intake of iodine, including through supplements, the doctor points out.
Symptoms and diagnosis
According to the doctor, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis causes no symptoms. “The symptoms are due to the destruction of the gland over time (which usually takes years), which leads to hypothyroidism,” explains the specialist. Hypothyroidism, in turn, can cause tiredness, excessive sleeping, constipation, dry skin and weak nails.
The diagnosis is made through blood tests. In the clinical analysis it is necessary to measure antibodies (antiTPO and antithyroglobulin) and thyroid hormones (free T4 and TSH), explains Aline.
Treatment of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis itself has no treatment. This is because the treatment is carried out when hypothyroidism is present, with thyroid hormone replacement therapy (levothyroxine).
Aline also points out that although hypothoreoidism affects memory, drug treatment of the disease does not cause forgetfulness. “The treatment aims to replace the hormone that is no longer produced in sufficient quantities by the gland, without side effects if appropriately regulated”, explains the doctor.
Finally, the endocrinologist emphasizes the importance of regular medical monitoring for patients suffering from Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. This is because this is a way to detect hypothyroidism and avoid changes in metabolism in general.
