A Japanese customer at the Seafood Paradise restaurant in Singapore went there with three other friends and was in for a surprise when he received a bill totaling 1,322 Singapore dollars (about R$4,700). The tourist refused to pay this sum, most of which was intended for his chosen dish, a crab that cost around 938 Singapore dollars (around R$3,300). Junko Shinba called the police and explained that he had not been adequately informed about the cost of the meal.
In an interview with AsiaOne, the Japanese said that a waiter suggested him chilli crab, a famous dish in Singapore and also in Malaysia. The meal is prepared with Alaskan king crab and charged by weight at the restaurant. Each 100 grams costs around R$95.
The crustacean used to prepare the chilli crab offered to customers weighed around 3.5 kilos and the customer claims, however, that the waiter did not explain how the count would be carried out.
“To avoid any miscommunication, the team even brought all the Alaskan king crab to the table before preparation,” said the owner of Seafood Paradise.
Shinba claims to have been told that “the whole crab would be cooked just for us” and to have deduced that his group would only receive a portion of it, so much so that they could not consume everything that was served.
“There were three plates full of crab and many other plates, we couldn’t finish them all,” Shinba says.
Even though the police were called, the customers made a deal and paid the bill. The restaurant offered a discount of R$382 and the rest of the bill was paid by credit card.
The Paradise Group spokesperson also said the restaurant manager helped the customer file a police report and offered the discount “out of goodwill.”
