Alexandre de Luca Cabreira was taking part in the 42km race when he suffered a heart attack
A 50-year-old man suffered a heart attack and died while running the 2023 Criciúma Altair Guidi Marathonin the south of Santa Catarina, last Sunday, 24. The runner was identified as Alexandre de Luca Cabreira and was a member of the Criciúma City Council for 17 years.
The president of the Legislative Chamber has decreed three days of official mourning, suspending work on Monday 25th for the funeral to be held. Cabreira’s memorial service takes place from 8am to 4pm, at the Millenium Crematorium.
According to the portal information ND+, Cabreira participated in the 42 km race. When he felt ill he was taken to São José hospital, but he did not survive.

Marathon organizers said he was provided assistance immediately and regretted what had happened.
“The organization is providing all the necessary assistance. The runner, as well as all the other athletes and collaborators of the event, were covered by the event’s insurance”, reads an excerpt from the press release.
