Multivaccination for children under 15 will reach 7 states this Saturday

The campaign aims to update vaccination data and restore high coverage rates in Brazil

Starting this Saturday (30th), the multi-vaccination campaign for children and adolescents under 15 years old reaches seven states. Promoted by Ministry of Healththe mobilization will be simultaneous in Paraíba, Ceará, Piauí, Alagoas, Tocantins, Goiás and São Paulo.

The goal of the campaign is to update vaccination records, restore high coverage rates and reduce the possibility of reintroduction and spread of vaccine-preventable diseases in Brazil.

The campaign offers vaccines against polio, hepatitis, BCG, MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) and Covid-19.

“Our country was the most respected in the world in terms of vaccinations, but with the decline in vaccination coverage in recent years, unfortunately we run the risk of reintroducing diseases that had been eliminated in Brazil. We must therefore protect our children and adolescents. We have a fundamental responsibility, something that the Statute of Children and Adolescents defines as a right. The right to a vaccine is the right to protection, it is the right to life that cannot be denied”states, in a note, the Minister of Health, Nisia Trindade.

Local reality

To increase adherence to multivaccination, the Ministry of Health is promoting specific actions in the States, in collaboration with local managers and leaders, depending on the reality of each locality.

Recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), the method, called microplanning, consists of several activities focused on the local reality, from defining the target population, choice of vaccines, dates and places of vaccination, to logistics.

Some of these actions include D-Day vaccination, active search for unvaccinated people, vaccination in every contact with a health service, immunization in schools, checking vaccination records and intensifying vaccination in areas indigenous.

Investment

According to the Ministry of Health, more than R$151 million was transferred to states and municipalities to develop the campaign.

Subsequent states

Rondônia, Bahia, Pernambuco, Sergipe and Rio Grande do Norte are the next states to carry out the multi-vaccination campaign. In Rondônia the articulation will begin on October 2nd, in the other states on October 7th.

Multivaccination was brought forward in Amazonas, Acre and Amapá, during the first half of the year, following warnings of reintroduction of diseases across borders. In March this year, a case of polio was reported in Peru, in a border area. Since 2016, Brazil has been considered by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a place at very high risk of reintroduction of the disease.
