The nutritionist explains the benefits of regular consumption of the food and the reasons for choosing boiled eggs

Hard-boiled eggs have always been a very controversial food. There are times they say it’s a good thing, other times it’s a bad thing… confusing, right? But the truth is that, as long as you consume it without exaggerating, it brings various benefits to the body.




To begin with, the egg is a source of cheaper and more versatile protein. “Two servings of eggs represent about 20% of your recommended daily protein intake (RDA), says nutritionist Maria Alves Garcia Barbi.

It is also an excellent source of nutrients. According to the expert, some of them are proteins with high biological value (that is, they provide all the essential amino acids), vitamins (riboflavin, vitamin E, vitamin B6, vitamin A, folic acid, choline, vitamin K, vitamin D and vitamin B12), minerals (zinc, calcium, selenium, phosphorus and iron), omega 3 and active compounds (lutein and zeaxanthin).

Furthermore, according to a study published by the magazine Lipids, regular egg consumption for a few weeks can be associated with a significant increase in HDL (good cholesterol) levels and a reduction in LDL (bad cholesterol) levels. And food also helps neurocognitive development, has an antioxidant action and protects the eyes.

Cooked or not, the egg also helps to increase muscle mass, improve the functioning of the immune system and also reduce the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine.

Boiled egg for other preparations

But if all these benefits are independent of preparation, then why are hard-boiled eggs considered better? For the nutritionist, the problem is the ingredients added to each of them.

When making an omelette or egg tart, for example, other ingredients will make up the recipe and this one it will drastically change its nutritional value. When making a fried or scrambled egg, a type of oil is used. In the hard-boiled egg, in turn, no additional fat is added to prepare it.

Possible contraindications

Maria explains that, in most cases, there are no contraindications to consuming boiled eggs. “The contraindication of eggs is only in case of individual intolerance or allergy”, explains the nutritionist.

The important thing, therefore, is knowing how to have balance and create a diet that, in addition to eggs, includes other foods that provide all the nutrients the body needs without exaggerating.
