Architects explain what they consider when creating a space for pets in residential projects and how they incorporate the needs of animals into the decoration

You pet friendly spaces they are a reality in both residential and commercial projects. And this awareness is not surprising, given that Brazil occupies third place in the ranking of countries with the largest pet population in the world, ‘losing’ only to China and the United States, according to data from the German consultancy firm GSK . According to the 2022 census of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), there are a total of 203 million pets in homes across the country.




Expert in listening to the wishes of each tutor, a team of architects shares important advice for interior projects and are unanimous in stating: it is possible to reconcile excellent choices and decisions within each furnishing style. Follow:

Space for pets at home

Pets have always been part of our lives, but until recently homes were not designed to accommodate this inclusion. “When I know that my clients have a pet, I try to learn about its characteristics and habits so that they can participate and enjoy the project,” explains the architect Cristiana Schiavoni. Although all furniture choices are also designed for them, he says that within a pet-friendly architecture this is essential define a completely dedicated space to mascots.

Regarding what this place should have, Cristiane explains: “It is always necessary know the habits of each type of pet, dog, cat, rabbit, etc. Hygiene habits, knowing the size of the animal, what type of food, thinking about spaces, solutions. We need to understand how each pet should relate to the house, so we can develop the project.”

Júlia Guadix, from the office Studio Guadix, shares this same opinion. “In every project I do for pet owners, I leave the location of the kennel, toilet mat or litter box, feeder, drinking fountain and toys marked. I always suggest that these items be in harmony with the decor of the housefollowing references such as the color palette, for example”, underlines the professional.

Tips for having a space for cats at home



In this project designed by architect Cristiane Schiavoni, the integrated balcony has become the playground for the two kittens of the family made up of a couple with two small children.  The structure with scratching posts, ladder and niches was in harmony with the furnishings and perfectly aligned with the play dynamics of the felines.

In the case of cats, it is normal to feel more confident and comfortable when they are indoors highest point of the floor, since their bodies have a structure favorable to these activities. “That’s why, for a family with two cats, I proposed a play area that was sensational and that didn’t clash in any way with the furniture. I say it was totally the opposite, because the aesthetic was complete”, recalls Cristiane.

The architect adds that it is necessary to have toys, scratching posts and climbing areas, so that cats don’t end up attacking the furniture. “They need to brush their nails, that’s why we put the scratching post so they don’t need to use the furniture. Cats need to exercise, climb on things, so when we put them on the stairs, it’s because actually, if don’t don’t do it, they’ll go into the cupboards and shelves.”

In homes with dogs, Cristiane believes that the ideal is to design a corner that offers a wide view of people passing through the house during the day, since this close presence for them is synonymous with safety and happiness.

How to choose fabric for carpets, sofas and armchairs

One of the household challenges for pet owners is overcoming the discomfort caused by odors. According to Júlia Guadix, the enzymatic disinfectants They are recommended for the hygiene of the spaces where dogs live, as the composition breaks down the compounds present in the urine. Organization cannot be neglected either, as it directly interferes with the hygiene of the places. “The more clothes, bedding and toys that are scattered around the property, the more these odors tend to spread,” he says.



Sofas and armchairs are the favorite furniture on which dogs and cats rest.  In the projects created by architects Vanessa Paiva and Claudia Passarini, even designer pieces, such as the Mole Armchair, by Sergio Rodrigues, represent a perfect and safe space – both for pets and for their owners.

To avoid impregnation of the coating, indicate the use of covers on furniture that dogs and cats have acquired the habit of lying down, avoiding direct contact with the original covering.
