Large breasts discourage physical activity: does mammoplasty help?

Large breasts discourage physical activity: does mammoplasty help?

Research highlights that breast reduction is an important strategy for improving patients’ quality of life and self-esteem

While some women dream of obtaining voluminous breasts, resorting to the implantation of silicone implants to achieve this result, others suffer from problems caused by the excessive size of their breasts.

“Large and heavy breasts, often disproportionate to the body, can cause overload of the spine and muscles in the region, causing pain and, in the long term, harmful postures, with shoulders and neck tilted forward, which is called kyphosis” , explains plastic surgeon Beatriz Lassance, member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery.

And the problems don’t end there. According to a study published in August in Journal of Reconstructive Surgerywomen with large breasts tend to do less exercise, especially high-intensity exercise, a strategy that could even contribute to breast reduction if they are the result of being overweight.

“In addition to contributing to weight control, exercise is essential for preventing a number of diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, depression and Alzheimer’s,” he points out.

The result of the study is a warning for women

To study how breast size affects women’s exercise habits, researchers conducted a questionnaire filled out by nearly 2,000 Australian, British and South African women. In their responses, women with large breasts said they believed that reducing their breasts would increase their participation and improve their performance in physical activities.

Researchers have also sought to understand the impact of breast reduction on women’s sporting habits. And, excluding those with a history of breast cancer, all study participants who underwent the breast reduction procedure, known as reduction mammaplasty, reported now having a healthier and more active lifestyle.

“The study therefore highlights the importance of facilitating and expanding access to breast reduction, which not only improves pain and back problems, but can contribute to the patient’s quality of life and self-esteem, as well as helping to prevent diseases by improving these women’s willingness to exercise. Today the operation is proposed by the SUS, but only with proof that the size of the breast is harmful to health and, even in this case, the patient has to face a long waiting list”, explains Beatriz.

Reduction mammaplasty: the objectives

According to the plastic surgeon, breast reduction aims to remove the breast glands, skin and excess fat from the region and reposition the breast so that it is proportionate to the rest of the body.

“The incisions for the surgery can be made around the areola of the breast, in an inverted T shape or even an L shape, starting around the areola and continuing along a vertical line to the base of the breast and another line horizontal in the breast fold part. The size, shape and visibility of scars after the procedure will vary depending on your case. In general, the larger the size of the breast, the larger the scars will be,” explains the specialist.

The doctor also underlines the importance of choosing a bra suitable for the size of the breast and the activities you will be carrying out, such as physical activity.

“Large breasts require a supportive bra that doesn’t put pressure on just the shoulders. Ideally, look for options with wider sides and chest compression. During exercise, especially in case of impact, it is important that the movement of the breast is as minimal as possible, otherwise breast pain and increased sagging skin in the region may occur, “he adds.

Beware of “miracle” products.

Finally, Beatriz Lassance warns about the miracle products available on the market that promise to reduce breast size.

“There are creams, massages and bras to reduce breasts around, but there is no scientific proof that they really work. Therefore, if you have excessively large breasts, the most important thing is to consult a plastic surgeon. While in some cases a balanced diet and exercise can help reduce size, in other cases reduction mammoplasty may prove to be the most suitable solution”, concludes the doctor.
