Learn how to protect your personal information from health insurance scams and fraud

The National Supplementary Health Federation (FenaSaúde) launches a booklet with advice for consumers

Faced with the emergence of new frauds and scams against health plan operators and beneficiaries, the National Federation of Supplementary Health (FenaSaúde) launched on Wednesday 18th a booklet with guidelines for the protection of personal data of medical insurance customers.

Among the warnings provided there are the precautions that must be adopted when negotiating the health plan, such as the correct compilation of the health declaration and the contract proposal, the guidelines not to be shared with service providers, such as clinics and professionals, personal data and plan card.

The document also highlights the importance of providing correct data when requesting portability of needs. The document also provides practical advice on how to avoid fraud when using the plan: correctly check the procedures listed before signing the service guide, do not lend your card and do not provide third parties with your login and password to access the plan request .

The brochure on personal data protection is part of the Saúde Sem Fraude campaign, created by FenaSaúde, and can be downloaded at this link. Previously the federation had already created a booklet with information on the rules for reimbursement.

New fraud

According to FenaSaúde, a new fraud involving the use of customers’ personal data has been practiced in the health plan market. According to the body, some providers could use personal data, without the beneficiary’s consent, to open a line of credit at digital banks or financial institutions, offering treatments and procedures for free.

Then, FenaSaúde explains, they ask the health plan operator for reimbursement. “There are reports of consumers who have been subjected to negative threats from credit companies after the operator denied the “refund” for the procedure requested in an irregular manner”, reads a note from the body.
