The skin rejuvenation specialist explains how wrinkles form.
Biomédica Raquel Vitti, specialist in skin rejuvenation and advanced integrative aesthetics at SP, explains that wrinkles form during the natural aging processes of the skin, but the environment, genetics and habits can influence them. “The skin is made up of layers: the epidermis (outer layer) and the dermis (deeper layer) where wrinkles are installed which alter the collagen and elastin fibres. But not all wrinkles are the result of ageing, they exist dynamic wrinkles, which are formed due to repetitive muscle movements or lifestyle and skin care, and which therefore can be avoided or delayed their appearance”, says the expert who lists the 7 reasons why wrinkles appear , separating what is avoidable and what cannot be controlled.
I can’t control
- Loss of collagen and elastin: It is a natural aging process, in which the body begins to produce less collagen and elastin, proteins essential for the support and elasticity of the skin. “When the skin begins to lose its ability to remain firm and flexible, it suffers as if there were a relaxation of the tissues, which causes the appearance of wrinkles.”
- Reduction of hyaluronic acid production: Although it is best known as one of the most effective treatments for an application that minimizes the signs of aging, hyaluronic acid is a substance produced naturally in the body and is largely responsible for maintaining the hydration of the skin, but over the years this production also decreases, so thinner and less hydrated skin causes the appearance of wrinkles.
- Genetics: Some people may be genetically more prone to developing early or deep wrinkles simply due to their more predisposed genetic background. “That’s why it’s important to pay attention and treat the signs of aging as soon as the first wrinkles start to appear,” warns Raquel.
- Loss of subcutaneous fat: Over the years, the layer of subcutaneous fat that helps fill and smooth the skin shrinks and makes room for wrinkles.
Preventable
- Sun exposure: Ultraviolet (UV) rays are among the main external factors that damage collagen and elastin fibers in the dermis, causing premature wrinkles. “Sunscreen is one of the simplest and most effective precautionary treatments,” he says.
- Repeated facial expressions: Angry faces, smiles and frowns are some of the facial expressions that, when they become frequent, can create creases and wrinkles that are difficult to eliminate. “Those who already have expression defects can opt for the application of botulinum toxin to minimize its effects”, teaches the biomedical doctor.
- Environmental factors: pollution, smoking, alcohol consumption and poor nutrition can also contribute to the formation of wrinkles, as they accelerate the skin’s aging process. “These precautions can be taken to prevent wrinkles from forming prematurely. They are simple habits that everyone can adopt and that their skin will thank them for,” concludes Raquel.
