Many people browse pharmacy shelves looking for creams that can reverse the signs of skin aging, erasing wrinkles, treating sagging skin and improving skin texture. But after all, do these cosmetics really have this ability?

“Today’s anti-aging cosmetics have something in common with those of 20 years ago: their minimal effectiveness against already established aging. Unfortunately, there is not yet a cream capable of reducing sagging skin, eliminating existing wrinkles, significantly stimulating collagen production or reversing the ‘Chinese mustache’,” explains the dermatologist. Paola Pomerantzeffmember of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology.

“The most effective active ingredient in cream for improving skin quality continues to be retinoic acid (used for over 20 years). It stimulates cell renewal and, therefore, helps prevent wrinkles and also reduce fine lines,” he adds.

Beware of creams that promise miracles

Miracle creams that promise to eliminate wrinkles, firm the skin and restore radiance, unfortunately, according to Paola, do not give the expected results.

“To achieve this, it is necessary to stimulate collagen through technologies or injectable collagen biostimulators – dermatological procedures performed in the office. Anyone who has already undergone surgery knows the difference between the result and the use of a cream,” says the doctor.

The doctor points out that even some substances such as caviar, gold or silk extract, present in very expensive cosmetics, are not absorbed by the skin:

“All this is pure marketing. Therefore, visiting a dermatologist is important. An expert professional, after a dermatological skin examination, will be able to prescribe creams that will really make a difference for every skin, hydrating or promoting an antioxidant and protective action, ”she says.

But none of the creams work?

“Creams can help prevent aging, but they cannot reverse it. In most cases, in addition to properly cleansing the skin, it is recommended to use an antioxidant (vitamin C) in the morning before sunscreen (minimum SPF 30). Vitamin C enhances the effect of sunscreen and helps protect the skin from pollution (which causes the formation of free radicals in the skin and accelerates aging),” explains the doctor.

«At night, the ideal would be to alternate an acid (retinoic, glycolic or azelaic, depending on each person’s skin) with a moisturizing cream. In this way we guarantee hydration of the skin (fundamental to avoid accelerating the aging process) and cellular renewal, ”he adds.

Therefore, the dermatologist believes that it is worth consulting a dermatologist from the Brazilian Society of Dermatology who will prescribe cosmetics that work (but do not reverse aging or work miracles) and that have a fair cost, rather than spending a lot on creams with miraculous promises on the internet which often do not even contain the necessary minimum of active ingredients.

“Now, if you want to rejuvenate your skin, the best option is to have a dermatologist examine you, make a diagnosis of your aging and also a plan to reverse wrinkles, sagging skin or lack of vitality in your skin through effective procedures and proven. There are different technologies such as microfocused ultrasound, laser and radio frequency, as well as injectables such as botulinum toxin, collagen biostimulator and fillers,” she concludes.
