This is a series that should not be missed, especially among fans of Japanese culture. Adapted from James Clavell’s novel of the same name, Shogun tells the story of a Portuguese Jesuit shipwreck off the coast of Japan in the 17th century. Among the survivors of the shipwreck is British sailor John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis).
The latter attracts the attention of General Yoshi Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), who decides to take her prisoner in order to teach her the customs and culture of his country. A complicated relationship unites two men, sometimes taking the form of a jailer and his prisoner, and sometimes two friends.
Shogun isn’t the first adaptation of a James Clavell novel to see the light of day. Already in 1980, the mini-series Shōgun saw the light of day on the American channel NBC, starring Toshiro Mifune and Richard Chamberlain. Almost half a century later, this new series will introduce this story to a whole new generation of viewers!
A trailer released by FX this week heralds a big-budget series that will feature epic battle scenes, but also majestic settings. A discreet aesthetic that serves up an exciting and fictional story, yet strongly inspired by authentic real-life events.
The ten-episode miniseries will air in February 2024 on FX in the US and on Disney+ in the rest of the world (including France). It is worth noting that the program is filmed in English, but also in Japanese.
