For financial educators, caution must be exercised to ensure that holiday excitement doesn’t hurt their pockets
The end of the year is approaching and with it numerous parties and secret Santa Claus games, which naturally lead to the purchase of gifts. But how to celebrate and please without going over the budget?
According to Thiago Martello, founder of Martello EF, a company that attracted investors to the Shark Tank Brasil program by offering its own methodology, the first guideline for the end of the year is to set a limit on how much you can spend on gifts.
“If a person doesn’t set a limit, the tendency is to spend what he can and what he can’t, because the end of the year presents a series of very suitable occasions for giving gifts,” he warns.
Martello also reminds us that the period corresponds to the 13th salary for those who are CLT, a figure that is often considered as an additional figure in the budget.
“People forget that they will have expenses at the beginning of the year, so it’s not enough to just win 13th place and go around giving presents to everyone. However, planning is necessary,” he advises.
Gift list
In addition to establishing a spending limit, Martello recommends drawing up a gift list so that the person really knows who should receive a souvenir, avoiding impulse purchases.
“It is important to also consider low values for gifts. What matters most is consideration when giving gifts. They are good as souvenirs and also pieces from second-hand shops, which are currently very popular due to sustainability,” he advises.
Another tip from experts is to give gifts at home. «Those who know how to cook, for example, can take advantage of the season and make decorated cakes or biscuits, which are always a pleasure and cost much cheaper than buying ready-made. Or, those who do crafts can use their creativity to give gifts to relatives and friends,” he suggests.
The infamous Secret Santa
Those who participate in Amici Segreti will often find themselves having to choose instead of saying “yes” to everyone. “The Secret Santa is a great way for everyone to receive gifts and for everyone to spend less on gifts. However, if the person has a secret friend in every corner, it will be of no use, as various purchases can damage the pockets. It is important to evaluate which gift exchanges it will be possible to participate in,” says Martello.
Finally, the expert recommends considering non-material gifts to celebrate.
“Often giving the gift of experiences and quality time, such as a trip to the park or a delicious coffee at home, can be more useful than simply buying something as a gift. You have to think, ultimately, that the main objective of all this is to make people feel loved,” she concludes.
