Airline pilots record the Northern Lights while flying to Lisbon, Portugal

Two Portuguese airline pilots recorded the moment the Northern Lights appeared in the sky during a flight from the United States to Lisbon

The dream of many is to see with the naked eye the famous Northern Lights, which usually appear in the skies of the northern polar portion of planet Earth. Impressively, two airline pilots had the privilege of observing the astronomical event up close, during a flight of over 9 thousand kilometers between origin and destination.

Pilots spot the Northern Lights during the flight

The record was achieved by airline pilots of the airline TAP Air Portugal, which means “Portuguese Air Transport”, during a flight from San Francisco, United States, to the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. The surprising moment was shared on YouTube, in the “Best Airplane Seat” channel, which in Portuguese means “best seat on the plane”.

In the images we can see the plane climbing. From the beginning the Andromeda Galaxy is indicated and then the planet Jupiter. Finally, greenish colors take over the skies and we come across the majestic boreal author. “When you have the best seat on the plane and the best view on the flight”this is what was written in the caption of the video published on TAP’s social networks.

What are the Northern Lights?

As a curiosity, the Northern Lights, a phenomenon to which the astronomer and physicist gives his name Galileo Galileo, occurs from the impact of solar particles with the atmosphere of planet Earth, driven by the Earth’s magnetic field. It is common to observe the phenomenon in countries such as Iceland and Canada, or in regions such as Siberia, Russia, and Alaska, the United States.
