Did you know that there is a sign that suggests a pine tree will make a very poor holiday decoration?
There are different attitudes to buying a Christmas tree: in some families it is a tradition that makes everyone happy, in others it is just a mundane item on the list “Don’t forget to do it before the New Year.” But in any case, it will be very annoying to make a mistake when choosing a Christmas tree, so you need to know which tree you should never buy.
The main sign of a bad Christmas tree
Usually we make a choice based on the appearance of the spruce. That’s right, after all, we are going to admire it! However, remember one thing: never buy a tree if it feels too light when you pick it up. As landscaper Roger Cook explains, this means that the tree, pine or fir is dehydrated: it will not last long and will very quickly lose all its needles.
Roger also advises looking for a tree whose bark is not too hard and uneven to the touch, and whose outer branches are soft and pliable. Make sure that when you touch them, the needles don’t fall off. If you notice this happening, it is best to look for another specimen. The needles themselves should be brightly colored and slightly sticky.

5 Mistakes That Can Ruin Your Christmas Tree
- Do not place the tree next to a heater or radiator – this will cause water to evaporate from the needles and branches very quickly. The same thing will happen if you place the main New Year’s decoration under sunlight.
- Do not place the tree near ventilation openings. It doesn’t matter what type of air circulates in it – hot or cold: both options will lead to rapid dehydration of the tree.
- Don’t hang heavy decorations on the upper branches – they are too thin for that. Massive toys should be placed at the bottom – this will make the tree more stable and protect it from deformation.
- If possible, water the tree. There are special holders that include a water reservoir, but a regular bucket of sand that can be moistened will do, or even a damp cloth wrapped around the cutting.
- Don’t bring your Christmas tree straight from the street into a warm house: as professional gardener Kelly Martin explains, that would be too much of a shock for the tree. If possible, first place the tree on a cool loggia or balcony.
