In vitro fertilization: 70-year-old woman gives birth to twins in Uganda, hospital says

Safina Namukwaya underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment and gave birth to a boy and a girl on Wednesday (29) via caesarean section, a hospital in Uganda said.

A 70-year-old woman has given birth to twins after in vitro fertilization treatment, a hospital in Uganda said.

On Wednesday (29/11), Safina Namukwaya gave birth to a boy and a girl via caesarean section at a medical fertility center in the capital, Kampala.

Namukwaya, who is one of the oldest women to have given birth, told local media that the birth of her children was a “miracle”.

The hospital congratulated her, saying this is more than a “medical success”: “It’s about the strength and resilience of the human spirit.”

In 2019, a 73-year-old Indian woman also gave birth to twins after IVF treatment.

“We have achieved an extraordinary goal: the oldest mother in Africa to give birth to twins, at the age of 70!”, the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Center (WHI&FC) wrote on Facebook.

“The mother and children are fine.”

Namukwaya told Ugandan newspaper Daily Monitor that her pregnancy was difficult because her partner abandoned her when he realized she was having twins.

“Men don’t like it when you say you’re pregnant with more than one child. Since I’ve been admitted here, my man hasn’t shown up,” the woman said.

This is Namukwaya’s second birth in three years. She gave birth to a baby girl in 2020.

She said she wanted to get pregnant after being ridiculed for having no children.

“I used to take care of people’s children and watch them grow up and leave me alone. I wondered who would take care of me when I grew up,” Namukwaya told the Daily Monitor.

It is not known whether she used a donor egg or her own, which could have been frozen and stored when she was younger.

Typically, women enter menopause between the ages of 45 and 55. Fertility declines during this period, but medical advances have made it possible for women to give birth through in vitro fertilization (IVF).

During the process, an egg is removed from the woman’s ovaries and fertilized with sperm in the laboratory. The fertilized egg, called an embryo, is then inserted into the woman’s uterus to grow and develop.
