The orthopedist explains the main precautions to prevent injuries and other problems during physical exercise
The end of the year is the time when many people make New Year’s resolutions, such as start exercising. But in order to fulfill this wish, you need to adopt some health care, you know?
Orthopedic doctor Cleber Furlan, member of the Brazilian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (SBOT), explains that before starting any exercise, it is important to ask a professional for help to analyze your physical condition.
According to him, it is necessary to consider factors such as muscle, bone, respiratory and cardiac conditions. All of this is important to prevent problems and ensure patient safety during physical activity.
“From an orthopedic point of view we evaluate whether the patient already has an injury, whether there is any work or sedentary lifestyle that has led to a spinal injury, tendonitis, and then we direct him to physical activity”, he explains.
Accident prevention
To avoid injuries, the specialist recommends practicing low-impact physical exercises, such as those performed in water. According to him, walking could also be recommended, but only after a cardiological evaluation.
Those planning to start in the gym should be aware of the excesses in weight training exercises. The doctor explains that without adequate monitoring, problems may arise resulting from incorrect or inappropriate movements for the body.
In these situations, it is very common to overload a bone region which, due to excess weight or incorrect support, ends up putting pressure and stress on these joints, causing fatigue and consequent fracture.
“No one can, from one day to the next, run a marathon. Sometimes it is a marathon for the body, which has not been exercised for a long time, not even a small, low-impact activity,” warns the expert.
Therefore, the ideal is to always have the guidance of a physical educator combined with medical supervision. This is essential to allow for more appropriate exercise, according to your limits and needs.
