In 2023 the main causes of temporary disability benefits (formerly sick pay) are in Brazil they were herniated disc and low back pain, according to data from the Ministry of Social Security.

The National Institute of Social Security (INSS) grants this benefit when a worker must be absent from work for more than 15 days due to illness, requiring a medical examination to grant it.

During the year, more than 2.5 million workers obtained this benefit, of which 51.4 thousand beneficiaries were due to herniated disc. Also considering lumbar and intervertebral disc pathologies, divided into two International Statistical Classifications of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD), the concessions amount to 89.2 thousand cases.

Low back pain came in second place, with 46,900 workers on furlough. Other pathologies such as uterine fibroids, wrist fractures, gallbladder stones, depressive episodes, anxiety, appendicitis, stroke and heart attack are also among the main reasons for absence from work.
