From the classic Copan building to the urban quilombo Aparelha Luzia […]
Amid the proliferation of micro-apartments, in buildings of dubious taste, São Paulo still retains addresses that reinforce the architectural talent of the largest city in South America.
To celebrate the 470th anniversary of the city of São Paulo, three architects/designers have chosen their favorite places from the point of view of their profession, from the classic Copan building to the Aparelha Luzia, cultural center and urban quilombo, in Campos Elíseos.
“Here [em São Paulo] we find styles ranging from colonial, to modern, to contemporary. The best thing is that nothing boils down to the obvious, you just have to pay attention,” describes interior designer Mariana Ribeiro.

art Gallery
(Praça da Luz, 2 – Light)
by Mariana Ribeiro, interior designer
This building in central São Paulo was founded in 1905 and houses a collection of works spanning different eras and styles. Its impressive architecture, designed by Ramos de Azevedo, is more than a visual experience, it is a space that invites contemplation and reflection.

“It’s the place I like to go when I can take an architecture-focused tour. The complex is a neoclassical construction with large windows, doors, pillars and porches. It also has a rustic modernity with exposed brick and areas with large roofing of natural light. The metal walkways and translucent roofs also provide a counterpoint of incredible visual comfort. A great tour option that showcases the strength of São Paulo’s architecture.”

This hotel in the Avenida Paulista region has a project signed by the French architect Jean Nouvel, which creates a counterpoint between modern and Vintage ▾ of its furniture in woody tones. All this combined with special lighting that gives a more welcoming atmosphere to all environments.

“All the details are taken care of in every environment, in addition to the lighting which uses many lamps, indirect and diffused light. The result is beautiful and the experience is very special.”

Lucia device
(Rua Apa, 78 – Campos Elíseos)
Alexandre Salles also recommends this cultural center and urban quilombo, founded in April 2016.
The place was created by activist, artist and educator Erica Malunguinho, as a space of coexistence and circulation for black artists, where parties, courses, exhibitions and debates take place, in addition to the kitchen managed by chef Cícera Alves.
Her name is a female version of the devices, resistance cells against the military dictatorship of 1964, and a tribute to Luzia, the oldest human fossil in Brazil.

Bar do Arcos
(Ramos de Azevedo Square, s/n – República)
by Nicole Gomes, lighting specialist
This bar in the basement of the Municipal Theatre, inspired by the film “The Shining” by Stanley Kubrick, has a unique personality, with exposed stones and bricks, whose strong point is the indirect lighting that embraces the space and gives a soft and pleasant light these spaces, spans of more than a hundred years.
The venue is also known for its signature drinks and classic cocktails.

“The space is super inviting and brings the light in as a surprise effect. When you enter, you wonder where the light comes from and it is this effect that makes us want to stay in the space for hours.”
