Meet Poor Creatures, nominated for 11 categories at the 2024 Oscars

Director Yorgos Lanthimos and actress Emma Stone repeat their partnership from 2018’s The Favorite in the film, which hits Brazilian cinemas in February

After Oppenheimerfeature film by Christopher Nolan, Poor Creatures was the production with the highest number of nominations among the competitors of the 96th edition of the Oscar, announced last Tuesday (23) by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, responsible for organizing the award.

Still unpublished in Brazil, Poor Creatures is based on the book of the same name written by Alasdair Gray and released in 1992. This is the eighth feature film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos – who was nominated for an Oscar for the first time with The Lobsterin 2017 – and the second together with the actress Emma Stone and the screenwriter Tony McNamarawith which the filmmaker worked on The favorite2018.

In history, stone interprets Bella Baxter, an adult woman, but with the mind of a child, the result of an abominable creation by Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe, The headlight). Imprisoned by her creator, she is eager to discover the world and ready to learn more about its beauty.

Taking advantage of the innocence of Bellathe lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo, Spotlight: Secrets Revealed) manages to convince her to escape a marriage contract with the young student Max McCandles (Ramy Youssef, Mr. Robot: Hacker Society), organized by its creator, and travel the world by his side, discovering the wonders he wanted so much, without knowing that, even outside the mansion of God, a woman’s life in society is still a prison. Featured in awards season

Poor Creatures debuted in September last year, during the 80th edition of the prestigious Venice International Film Festivalfrom which he won the Golden Lion, the main prize awarded by the festival jury.

During awards season, it won Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical and Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for Emma Stone at the Golden Globe. The actress also won the Critics’ Choice Awards, which nominated the film in 13 categories.
